Curriculums are created so the coach can implement all aspects of the game into their coaching. Coaches can plan their coaching seasonally, or in short periods.
With curriculums, you as a coach, can organise the season while supporting your practice with various theories and concepts. It allows for you as a coach to support the continuing development of your athletes.
There are multiple different types of curriculums coaches can use. These can be split into short, medium and long term plans (meso, macro and micro), or different theories such as the spiral curriculum that focusses on player development throughout the year.
A spiral curriculum is a visual aid to view the season as a whole. This type of curriculum allows for fundamental ideas to be repeatedly presented throughout the curriculum, deepening the levels of difficulty throughout (Harper & Stamper, 1999). This allows the coach to increase the challenge point throughout the year
When using Spiral Curriculums, we can use phases 1,2 and three to help us structure our weekly training splits.
This table is an example on how you can structure your weekly training split. It follows the phases of progression from the spiral curriculum and allows you to cover all fundamental moments of a hockey game; defensive (D), out of possession (OP), attacking (A) and in-possession (IP).
As a coach, we need to be careful of over-planning as we can leave ourself room for reflecting (Plan-do-review). Reflecting allows for us as coaches to fine tune our sessions specific to the players needs and wants.
This table is an example of a seasonal plan I developed when coaching Leeds Beckett Hockey Second Team. It draws upon different performance problems to work on which the team may experience throughout the season. It allows for you as a coach to cover all the fundamental hockey moments of a game. When using the spiral curriculum to support the development of this, it allows for me to increase the challenge point and difficulty throughout the season, enabling constant development throughout.
